Being BOLD

19 Jan

“Ask and you shall receive.”

I have a friend who loves asking for free things. The setting doesn’t matter, it could be a restaurant, or a store, even at her perspective jobs. And, nine times out of ten, she gets the thing she’s asked for.  Curiously, I asked her why she did it. She told me simply “people get what they ask for.”  She went on to tell me how she’s never paid for a smoothie at our school’s smoothie shop and how she has a closet filled with clothes that she got from consignment shops or local designers for free.  I didn’t understand how she even went about asking for these things, and she reminded me that the worst thing that could happen is that she’d be told no.

She doesn’t know this, but she’s inspired me with her actions. I’m not going to start asking for extra pancakes at IHOP, but for things I consider important, I won’t hesitate to ask.  In one of my classes at school, I have to complete an externship. I’ll have to follow around a media professional around for a day. I am going to start BIG. My top choices aren’t local, and they’re really famous. Instead of making a safe choice, I’m willing to expose myself to get the chance to do an externship with these top journalists.  I have to remember that even if they say no, I know I tried.  And, I won’t stop at the externship. From now on in life, I will go for things that may seem impossible, because being scared and safe will get me nowhere.

Soul In Motion

16 Jan

As an intern with Voice Of America, I had the opportunity to do a story about Soul In Motion Players, Inc.  The performing arts group is based in Washington, DC and their goal is to educate and entertain while showcasing African culture through drumming and dancing.

This particular show was held at the Discovery Theatre  for young children. The drummers and dancers taught the children through hands on demonstrations and stories that everyone could relate to.

After the show, I interviewed the Soul In Motion drummers. I could feel their passion when the spoke about their intstruments and the experiences they’ve had learning about African drumming.

Magnetic Polish Review

15 Jan

“I sent you to school so you could read.”  I just heard my mothers voice in my head when I realize I made a simple mistake the first time I tried my new Magnetic Polish by Nails Inc. But, at that point, I’d already finished all ten fingers and I didn’t feel like going back to try again.
About a week later, I decided it was time to try the polish again. This time, I read the directions clearly. This is the finished product:

So, I really do like this nail polish, but it has some pros and cons.

Pros:

  • It dries quickly
  • The magnet has the convenient lip on it so it doesn’t touch your nails and mess them up
  • When you actually read the directions, the steps aren’t difficult.
  • (after 3 days) it seems like the nail polish doesn’t chip quickly.

Cons:

  • I wish the magnet made a different effect on each nail. (I turned the magnet around on a few nails to have the swirls going vertical instead of horizontal, but I wish the effects were unique with each nail.)
  • Although this nail polish doesn’t chip easily, fixing minor chips is difficult because of the magnetic swirls

Bottom line, I would buy this polish again. It really is a good quality, and it looks cute when you use it as regular polish too! What do you think? Would you give the polish a try? It also comes in two other colors, purple and teal. I have all three colors since I got the set.
